Electricity Regulatory Commission

Established under the Electricity Regulatory Commission Act, 2074 and the subsequent rules of 2075, our regulatory body was formed by the Government of Nepal on 2076/01/23. We are dedicated to simplifying the generation, transmission, distribution, and trade of electricity, ensuring a systematic, transparent, and balanced approach to meet the nation's demands.

Formation of the Commission

The Commission is established with a focus on expertise and experience, ensuring a high standard of knowledge and professionalism. The Chairperson, appointed by the Nepal Government, must have served in the special class of the Nepal Government or possess at least 20 years of work experience. Additionally, the Chairperson must hold a minimum educational qualification of a master's degree in economics, commerce, accounts, law, or engineering.

Supporting the Chairperson are four members, also appointed by the Nepal Government. Each member is required to have a minimum of 15 years of work experience and must hold at least a master's degree in economics, commerce, accounts, law, or engineering. This structured approach guarantees that the Commission is composed of highly qualified and experienced individuals, capable of fulfilling its responsibilities with excellence.

Function, Duties and Authority

As specified by the Act, the commission has the following function, duties and authority.

Technical management

For regulating the generation, transmission, distribution, or business of electricity, the commission will oversee the technical management.

Determining tariffs and regulating electricity purchase and sale

The commission will oversee setting tariffs and regulating the purchase and sale of electricity.

Maintaining competition and protecting the interests of consumers

The commission maintains market competition and protects consumer interests.

Enhancing organizational capacity

The commission will enhance the organization of licensed persons to maintain corporate governance.
